PLA Review, 3D Printz
Here's my thoughts and findings on the various PLA colours on offer over at www.3dprintz.co.uk
At the end of my post will be links to all items referenced in case you wish to purchase for yourself.
I have been using 3D Printz filament exclusively for at least 6 months now, so i feel i have enough information and used it enough to give all of you a honest review.
Lets start with consistency, as its one of the main factors that will determine how well your print will go with the selected filament. When checking with a pair of calipers and i usually find the tolerence is bang on the advertised +/-0.03mm, which is as i had suspected as i have had no problems where i was suspicious of the filament.
Lets talk about usability. For my tests i used 3D Printz Black PLA and 3D Lac to help bed adhesion.
My first test was a heat test to see how the print did from temps ranging from 190-230 degree's. After the temperature test tower and finished printed i found that strangely, heat didnt seem to matter and the finish of the print never really changed throughout the temp test tower, if we're getting picky it seemed to be the smoothest and most constistent around 215-220 degrees.
I then ran some 20mm test cubes to test printing speeds @ 220 degrees.
I found great results running my print speed on Cura 2.5 at 50mm/s, which slows down the outter walls to 25mm/s and the outer walls/infill will be at 50mm/s. For the most detail in prints i found these speeds were my best results.
Next is colours, and boy do they have some brilliant coloured PLA. I have gone through 2 or 3 spools of both black and white, since most of my customers just want black or white prints. Some of my favorite colours i have used from 3D Printz is the gold, purple and clear filaments they offer.
The clear filament add's a unique touch to 3d printed vases and picture frames, especially when experiments with infil types, try printing a test cube with a concentric infill!
I have loved using there purple PLA, it has a vibrant colour that i really like, and so do my nieces and nephews whos wanted dozens of fidget spinners and toys printed in this eye-catching colour.
Lets finish up with the gold PLA, while slighly pale it gives objects a great sheen to them when the light catches the print. Very much like the gold colour, and have used it for many game/tv show props.
Ok so lets talk about packaging, May not sound important but if your filament has been stored incorectly and been in a humid area your filament could deteriorate over time giving you problems when you try to print with it.
You'll be happy to know 3D Printz take this seriously, and vacuum pack your filament in a tough bag and throw in a decent size bag of silica gel desiccant. Then its put in a tidy box made to size of the filament spool, which makes it handy to keep for storing your filaments. Just through your spool back in its box and make sure the desiccant is in there and you wont have to worry about filament taking on any water while there not being used.
Overall, im extremely happy with the filament i have bought from the company so far, i've had no filament related problems and the tolerance they quote is bang on, which is what you want in a filament. They seem to be very well priced, happy to help customers if they do have troubles at all and are quick to respond to any inquiries. The quality, service and choice means there still going to be getting my business.
So 3D Printz gets my tick of approval, and will continue to be my go-to for filaments. I am currently starting to use their abs materials, so expect a review of them in the coming weeks also.
